Two separate issues are tangled together here: whether it's safe to travel internationally while your OPT is ending, and whether remote work from India counts toward your OPT requirements. Both deserve caution.

F-1 Optional Practical Training authorizes work connected to your program of study, and immigration rules track your employment closely, including a limit on how many days you can go without qualifying work during the OPT period, commonly discussed as a 90-day unemployment cap under the F-1 regulations (8 C.F.R. § 214.2(f)). Two things about your situation make this tricky. First, unpaid work still needs to meet the same core requirements as paid work to count, meaning it must be real, structured practical training related to your field, not just informal remote tasks. Second, and more importantly, the rules on work performed while you are physically outside the United States are not clearly settled, even when the employer is a U.S. company. Depending on how your time abroad is recorded, remote work from India during this period could leave you appearing to have accrued unemployment days on your OPT record. Do not rely on that arrangement until your international student office confirms in writing how it will be reported.

Travel itself is also a separate risk, especially this close to your program transition. Since your OPT ends July 9 and your PhD starts August 16, you are moving from one immigration status basis to another. Before you fly back, you generally need a new Form I-20 from your university for the PhD program, signed by your international student advisor, and F-1 rules typically limit how early you can re-enter the U.S. before a program's start date, commonly no more than 30 days ahead. Traveling now, mid-OPT, and returning later requires getting this timing and paperwork exactly right.

What to do before you book anything: 1. Contact your university's international student office now. Ask specifically whether your remote, unpaid work while abroad could count as a reporting gap, and how to report it either way. 3.
